Abstract

Generative artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly integrated into higher education, yet there is limited understanding of how stable personality traits shape students’ evaluations of these tools. This study examined the relationship between narcissistic traits and attitudes toward AI among Indonesian undergraduates. A cross-sectional correlational design was employed. Participants were 224 undergraduate students from Universitas Negeri Padang who had used AI at least once for academic purposes (e.g., writing, summarizing, or generating ideas). Narcissism was measured using the Narcissistic Personality Inventory–13 (NPI-13), and attitudes toward AI were assessed with the 4-item AI Attitude Scale (AIAS-4), both administered in Indonesian-adapted versions. Data were collected online via a self-report questionnaire and analyzed using JASP. Preliminary analyses included data cleaning, descriptive statistics, and internal consistency estimates using Cronbach’s alpha, followed by Pearson’s correlation once parametric assumptions were met. The results indicated that students tended to show moderate levels of narcissistic traits and generally favorable attitudes toward AI. Pearson’s correlation analysis revealed a significant positive association between narcissism and attitudes toward AI (r = .26, p < .001), corresponding to a small-to-moderate effect size: students with higher narcissistic tendencies evaluated AI more favorably as an academic tool. These findings suggest that personality differences, particularly narcissistic traits, contribute to how students appraise AI, alongside factors such as digital literacy and institutional policy. The study highlights the need to incorporate individual differences into AI literacy initiatives and academic integrity programs in higher education and points to the importance of further research with larger and more diverse  samples across Indonesian students.
